Jesus wants to heal the history so that it does not affect our identity or determine our destiny.
There are lots of people in the bible who live out overcoming their past and are remembered as overcomers.
Rahab – a prostitute, becomes a deliverer of Israel and is mentioned in the lineage of jesus
Jacob – a liar and cheat, who becomes the father of the tribe of Israel
Joseph – rejected by his brothers, sold into slavery, sexually harassed and then falsely accused rises to become prime minister of eygypt
Mary magadale – demon possessed crazy women becomes disciple of jesus
The nude rude dude – gets set free and becomes the first missionary
And paul. Who was saul.
Paul had quite a history. He had a rap sheet and a half. Back when he was Saul, he had a PAST.
Paul calls himself the chief of sinners – the worst of sinners – the overachiever of sinners:
Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners— of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. 1 Timothy 1:15-16
